Sourcing for shoes? China's Shoe City is the place to be
Many of the world’s prominent sneaker brands prefer Quanzhou in Fujian province as their top sourcing location for shoes and for good reason.
Dubbed as China’s “Shoe City”, this coastal city and Fujian’s largest metropolitan area churns out more than 500 million pairs of sneakers annually, accounting for a quarter of the country’s overall output. Sports shoes are Quanzhou’s specialty but manufacturers there also offer all types of footwear from sleek dress boots to comfy casual shoes, slippers and sandals.
Manufacturing is centered on the district of Jinjiang, also known as China’s “Shoe Capital”, which hosts as many as 5,000 factories and generates more than $15 billion in yearly revenue, according to 2017 figures from the Jinjiang Council for the Promotion of International Trade. It is also home to three of the country’s four largest sports shoe companies, namely Anta, Xtep and 361 Degrees.
Quanzhou suppliers leverage on strong production capability and years of experience to launch a variety of functional and eye-catching releases. Most companies are specialists with vertically integrated facilities and own advanced equipment, including computerized pattern-making, cutting, upper-preparation, stitching, shoe-lasting, finishing and pressing machines.
Complementing these benefits is Quanzhou’s large pool of skilled employees. The majority of workers come from within the province, allowing them to earn a living closer to home. Because of this, employee turnover is minimized resulting in a stable workforce.
Quanzhou boasts solid transportation infrastructure as well. The Quanzhou Port located within the city facilitates transport of goods. The area is also accessible from different domestic and overseas locations through the Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport, which offers daily flights. A series of expressways and railways traverse through the city, including the high-speed Fuzhou-Xiamen Railway.
